Political Rant of the Day - Right Wing Conspiracy My Ass!

It seems that every time the Supreme Court delivers a ruling in favor of the Bush Adminsitration, Democrats (which I now consider myself to be) call it a Right Wing Conspiracy. After a while, this becomes akin to the boy who cried wolf!

You hear about the Right Wing Conspiracy so much that eventually you just ignore it because you are so sick and tired of hearing that phrase tossed around like bad conversation at a Democratic Fund Raiser! (I am not a fan of Howard Dean!)

Let's look at the latest decision of the Supreme Court concerning the medical use of Marijuana. Now first lets look at the make up of the Supreme Court in terms of Liberal Justices vs. Conservative Justices.

Typically the following Justices are seen as making up the liberal part of the Court:

Stephen Breyer --- Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- John Paul Stevens -- David Souter

Typically the following Justices are seen as making up the conservative part of the Court:

William Rehnquist --- Clarence Thomas -- Antonin Scalia -- Anthony Kennedy

Finally, Sandra Day O'Conner is seen as a moderate, the swing vote if you will.

Now in case you didnt know, the Supreme Court ruled against allowing for marijuana to be used for medicinal purposes. People with illnesses that could be helped with marijuana cannot have the drug prescribed by their physician. Whether you agree or not that is the decision of America's highest court.

Lets look at the breakdown of the 6 - 3 decision shall we:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Stephen Breyer
John Paul Stevens - who read the majority opinion
David Souter
Antonin Scalia
Anthony Kennedy

William Rehnquist
Clarence Thomas
Sandra Day O'Conner - writing the dissent for the minority

Now based on this information, one can HARDLY call this a right wing decision. I mean damn you actually have Antonin Scalia (the pronounced leader of the anti-gay movement on the court) voting along side Ginsburg (one of the most liberal justices on the court).

You can hardly call it a Right Wing Conspiracy when you have Ginsburg, Stevens, Souter, and Breyer in the majority striking down the medical use of marijuana. These justices typically make up the beloved liberal side of the court that Democrats love.

Well guess what democrats, its you own beloved LIBERAL judges that now struck down medical marijuana and your hated CONSERVATIVE justices (Rehnquist, O'Conner, and Thomas) who voted to allow it.

Now obviously the labels of Conservative and Liberal depend on which topic you are discussing such as civil rights, states rights, social issues, etc....but based on the decision and the way the individual ways that the justices voted

This message was sponsored by Matthew - a recently converted Democrat who doesnt put up with the whining-let's-bitch-and-moan-about-the-state-of-our-party-and-blame-everything-on-the-Republicans-like-Howard-Dean-does bullshit.

How about we take the issues to the people and let them decide. That is why we are democracy.

And lets stop yelling about the Right Wing Conspiracy. Obviously THAT is not working people. The republicans have won the senate and house elections for the last 12 years.

Lets find a new argument. The people dont believe the wolf is coming anymore.

I just mentioned on Kristal's blog ("Biased Reporter") that this is maybe the most balanced Supreme Court that we've ever had (3 libs, 3 conservs, 3 moderates), and affirmed that you were right when you said that the libs voted against medical marijuana.

Although I can't loop John Paul Stevens in with the liberal justices, because that implies that he is consistent in his voting pattern. But Stevens is so all-over-the-place that I have to call him a moderate just because I don't know how the Hell to loop him in with either side!

I also agree that Democratic whining gets us nowhere, btw. In 2000, I felt like the party had two choices:

    (1) Recognize that, Florida or no Florida, they could have and should have won by a large enough majority to make the recount irrelevant, and understand that they needed to do something to win respect and credibility from swing voters everywhere, or

    (2) Blame Nader.

Which is exactly the same thing they're doing with the right-wing conspiracies! Blame the other guy, it sure beats changing the way we do things!

I agree. Most of these judges are not totally liberal or conservative.

To Matthew: I don't understand why you converted from being a Democrat. You obviously wasn't that rooted in Democratic ideals. You obviously have been brainwashed by the right wingers and their soapbox.

Maybe it'll take a few days reading my blog to convert you back;)
